Come and Play Day

Sunday 8 March 2026, 10:30 – 17:00, Adastra Hall, Hassocks, West Sussex

This orchestral Come and Play Day is a fantastic opportunity for local musicians to spend a day with Burgess Hill Symphony Orchestra, and experience the joy of playing in a full orchestra. Under the guidance of our Musical Director, Mike Wood BEM, we will rehearse several pieces and present the results of our work in an informal concert at the end of the afternoon.

We will be working on movement 4 of Brahms Symphony number 4, and some John Williams film music – the Star Wars Suite and a selection of his other pieces.

The suggested level of playing is Grade 6+ or equivalent orchestral experience (such as a youth orchestra or the Reza Community Orchestra), but it will be a relaxed atmosphere and the event is open to all to apply. If you want to have a look at the music in advance to see if you would be comfortable tackling it, the Brahms is in the public domain on the IMSLP web site: https://imslp.org/wiki/Symphony_No.4,_Op.98_(Brahms,_Johannes). We will provide download links for John Williams pieces on request. If you would like to find out more or want to discuss taking part, please email [email protected].

If you are interested in taking part, please complete the form below. Please note that the number of places is limited (both within sections and overall), so early application is recommended.

The day will end with an informal concert that you may invite friends or family to come to.

What you will need to bring on the day:

  • Music stand
  • A copy of your music (this will be sent to you via email for you to print out or load onto a device prior to the event).
  • Lunch

Tea and coffee will be provided through the day.

The cost of the day is £10 (£5 for under-18s). Any under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult.
